Batanes Itinerary: How Many Days You Actually Need

Three routes, three days

Batanes tourism runs on three standard routes and every operator sells the same three. North Batan is the compact loop around Basco and takes a half day. South Batan is the long coast road through Mahatao, Ivana and Uyugan and takes a full day. Sabtang is a full day whatever you do with it, because the crossing runs once in the morning and comes back in the early afternoon.

That is three touring days, and the 3-day package is built exactly to it: North Batan 12:00 to 18:00 on arrival day, Sabtang with a 05:30 pickup on day two, South Batan 09:00 to 17:00 on day three.

The fourth island, Itbayat, is not on the standard circuit. It needs its own two days and a long open-sea crossing.

Why the flight makes day one an afternoon

Aircraft into Basco land late morning. That is why every multi-day listing compared on this site starts day one at 12:00 rather than at breakfast, and why North Batan, the shortest route, is always the arrival-day route.

It also means the day you fly out is not a touring day. The four-day package makes this explicit: its day four is the flight back to Manila, with nothing scheduled on it. If your return flight is on the morning of day four, you have three touring days, not four.

The five-day recommendation

Guides who know Batanes recommend five days on the ground rather than three, and the reason is not that there is more to see. It is that the two things that can cancel, the Sabtang boat and the flight itself, cannot be rescheduled inside a tight plan.

With five days, a closed channel on Tuesday means Sabtang on Thursday. With three, it means Sabtang did not happen. The tours cost the same either way; the difference is accommodation, which in Basco starts around PHP 1,200 a night for two at the budget end.

Two days: Batan Island only

If your flights give you an arrival afternoon and one full day, do Batan properly rather than sprinting at three islands. The 2-day package at $56.29 runs North Batan 12:00 to 18:00 on day one and South Batan 09:00 to 17:00 on day two, with lunch and admissions on both.

What you give up is Sabtang, and Sabtang is the island with the stone villages people picture when they picture Batanes. There is no way to compress it: the boat is a morning boat, the return is early afternoon, and the road transfers at either end take an hour each.

Four days, and whether it is worth it

The four-day package at $331 covers the same three routes as the $96.79 three-day package and adds the departure day. That is $234 more per person for a day with no touring scheduled on it.

If you want four days in Batanes, the cheaper structure is to book the three-day package and leave the fourth day unscheduled. An unbooked day in Basco is the most useful thing in a Batanes itinerary, because it is the one that absorbs weather.

Adding Itbayat

Itbayat is the northernmost inhabited island in the Philippines and it is a separate two-day trip: an open-sea crossing from Basco Port to Valanga Port, a full day of cliffs and ports, a night in a fan room, then a pre-dawn hike to Rapang Cliff for sunrise. The 2-day Itbayat tour is $256.

It belongs on a second visit, or on a trip of a week or more. The crossing is longer and more exposed than the Sabtang channel, the independent boat fare alone is reported at about PHP 450 one way against roughly PHP 100 for the faluwa, and it is the first thing weather takes. Nobody should build a first Batanes itinerary around it.

A week, if you have one

Five touring days plus two spare gives you all four islands with room to breathe: the three standard routes, Itbayat, and a day left over. That is a lot of Batanes, and it is the version people who have been once come back for.

It also spreads the flight cost across more days, which is the only real way to make a Batanes trip cheaper per day. The tours are ordinary Philippine prices; the flight is not.

The tours

The listings compared on this site run from $56.29 for the two-day Batan package to $331 for the four-day package, with single-day tours between $115 and $162 and the three-day full circuit at $96.79.

On the multi-day packages the per-person rate falls as the party grows, because the vehicle is priced whole: one or two travellers get a cogon tricycle, three to ten get a van. A group of four pays noticeably less per head than a solo traveller for the same itinerary.

The flight, which is the actual budget

Basco Airport is the only airport in the province and its runway cannot be extended, so seat capacity is capped and fares behave accordingly: roughly PHP 4,000 to PHP 15,000 return, commonly around PHP 7,000. Philippine Airlines is the airline named on the route and reintroduced a Clark-Basco service; Manila departures are seasonal and thin.

The fees nobody quotes you

Since 15 June 2026, under Executive Order No. 23, Series of 2026, every visitor pre-registers at bookings.strikingbatanes.com and pays PHP 405 per person: PHP 200 ecotourism fee plus PHP 205 visitor ID fee, with a government ID or passport, a verification selfie, your accommodation and an accredited tour operator.
