Itbayat Island 2-Day Tour from Basco

Day one: the crossing and the east coast

The day begins with an early departure from Basco Port for Valanga Port on Itbayat. On arrival you register at the Municipal Hall of Itbayat — Itbayat is a municipality with its own town hall, airport and ports, and roughly three thousand people live there — and the registration fee is inside the tour price.

From there the route runs to Tachimus Port and the Aruis Tree, then Torongan Cliff and Hills, where the listing points out the stone boat-shaped burial grounds and the historical markers that mark early Ivatan settlement. Torongan is where Ivatan oral history places the first landfall in the islands.

After lunch: Itbayat Airport, Kavaywan Lake, Mauyen Cliff and Port, the Secret Arch, and Chinapoliran Port. Late in the day there is a trek up Mt. Karoboboan for the view, then Paganaman Port for sunset, dinner and the night.

Day two: Rapang before dawn

The second day starts very early with the trip out to Rapang. The reward is sunrise from Rapang Cliff and Hills, with the Stonebell and the Rock Garden — a field of wind-sculpted coral limestone that looks like nothing else in the Philippines.

Breakfast comes after the hike, then the return crossing to Basco. There is no second day of touring; day two is the sunrise and the boat home.

What is included

Boat fare both ways, round-trip transport, a van on the island, a tour guide, accommodation in a fan room and the registration fee. Meals are in the price — that is what "with meals" in the listing title refers to.

Personal expenses are excluded. There is no hotel pickup in Basco: the crossing leaves from the port early and you make your own way there. The operator confirms the exact departure time in advance and asks you to be reachable on WhatsApp, which is the same pattern across all three Gladex listings compared on this site.

A fan room, and what that means

The listing is specific: accommodation is a fan room. On Itbayat that is the normal standard — this is an island of a few thousand people at the top of the Philippines, not a resort destination, and the accommodation exists for the people who need to be there.

Bring what you would bring to a homestay. The same listing that tells you to carry extra cash because stores are cash-only is telling you something about the island generally.

Open sea, not a channel

The Sabtang crossing from Ivana is 30 to 45 minutes across a channel and is called off often enough that operators plan around it. Basco to Itbayat is longer, further north and fully exposed — the boat fare alone is reported at about PHP 450 one way when bought independently, against roughly PHP 100 for the Sabtang faluwa, which gives you the scale of the difference.

There is a small airstrip on Itbayat, which is why Itbayat Airport appears on the day-one route. It does not give tourists a dependable way off the island when the sea closes.

How to book it sensibly

Put it at the start of a longer trip, not the end. If the boat does not run on your date, you want days left to reschedule rather than a flight out of Basco the next morning.

Book it in the dry season. December to May is the dry window, February to April the settled part of it and April the driest month; June to November is typhoon season and August is the worst of it. On an exposed northern crossing that difference is not marginal. Month by month has the full picture.

Who should not book it

The listing states it plainly: not suitable for people with mobility impairments or people with vertigo. Torongan, Rapang and Mauyen are cliff-edge sites and the day-one route includes a hill trek.

Anyone prone to seasickness should think hard too. Reviewers of the much shorter Sabtang crossing describe taking anti-motion-sickness tablets and still struggling; this crossing is longer and rougher.

Second-time visitors, and people with slack days

If you have already done North Batan, South Batan and Sabtang, Itbayat is the obvious next thing and there is nothing else like it in the Philippines. If you are on a five-day-plus trip with room to absorb a cancelled boat, it fits.

If you have three days and a fixed flight home, it does not. Book the 3-day Batan and Sabtang package at $96.79 instead — it covers the three standard routes and is the trip almost everyone should do first.

The price, in context

At $256 per person for two days, it is the second most expensive listing compared here, above every single-day tour and below only the $331 four-day package. That price includes a night's accommodation, all meals and a long boat crossing both ways, which is a different shape of product from a day tour.
